Post-punk improv collective needs diverse contributors

I’ve started an improv project with post-punk and diy leanings, to workshop ideas in a safe space and with a view to it being a melting pot from which many new bands can be born. Interest from people who are not white men is particularly needed. Accessibility needs will be accommodated so let me know if you have any.

Diversity of identity and breadth of musical influences will be important to its success, so I won’t post a list of reference bands. Your background could be anything from jazz, reggae, punk, afrobeat, experimental music, indie, whatever. But Rip Rig & Panic meets the Raincoats wouldn’t be a bad starting point to get where I am coming from.

Commitment to musical experimentation and willingness to accept others ideas will be paramount to the music, and empathy for people’s differences crucial to the success and longevity of the project.

Amazing technique on an instrument or voice is not a prerequisite, but humility probably is, for beginners and virtuosi alike.

A mix of gender, ableness, ethnicity, sexuality, and age is important, and if you are a tory this probably isn’t for you.

Could be based in SE, SW Central or E London depending on where people are based, and will probably move around.

Time commitment would be a three hour session fortnightly to start with, on a week night probably but weekend daytime sessions also possible.

To get us started I will faciliate sessions, with a democratic and consensual approach. I play saxophone well, drum kit improving but not really good yet, plus a bit of guitar, keyboard and vocal abominations. I teach music for a living in a primary school, have also taught in secondary. I have played in bands ranging from jazz to rock to folk to soul etc. Happy to send links to stuff if you want Smile

Get in touch if this sounds like a good idea!

  1. Hi Hubert,

Is there a way to get in touch if you are still looking for contributors?

    Thanks,

    Emily
