London Street Song 2012

The London Street Song 2012 is an opportunity for everyone across London to express in the lyrics of a song the world in which they live. 2012 is a significant year in terms of the history of London. Not only is this the year of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, but also the year that London hosts the Olympic Games. We want to hear from you, from every corner of the the capital about the street or road where you live. How has all this affected you. Have these momentous events or the state of the economy or even the aftermath of the London riots brought communities together or has it made people feel alienated.

Let us know about the characters and the history, both recent and further back in time. How have things changed, whether for good or for bad. We would like to hear any personal anecdotes, trips down memory lane which can help breath life into the fabric of what it has meant to live in your particular road or street in London. Whether you have lived there for weeks or decades it doesn’t matter, we want to hear your voice.

Put simply we aim to create 21st Century London folk music. We are going to make a record in the most literal sense of the word of what London feels like as a place to live in 2012. We are going to choose 12 of the most vivid and fascinating streets in London and with your help write a song for each.

The music and lyrics will aim to reflect the particular essence of each road or street. An album will then be recorded and released with a series of live dates across the capital to bring the whole experience to life. In addition we are going to be filming the whole process in order to make a TV documentary film. You can get in touch and also keep in touch and up to date with everything via our Facebook page or via Twitter at

We simply need your story. Anything you want to tell us about your street and what it means to you and your family to live there.

Please e mail your information to

Please include any pictures or even audio that you think may help create the picture you wish to convey.

On September 1st we will produce and publish a list of the top 100 streets based on the submissions sent into us. So please make sure you have sent all your info, etc by this date so you have an opportunity to be included in the top 100. On September 15th we will produce and publish the final short list of the 12 most interesting London streets. We will then get in touch with all the people selected and begin the song writing process.

We will write the songs in collaboration with the people who have given us the most interesting and fascinating material. We aim to create compelling songs that melodically do justice to the lyrical content that people are providing us. As the songs are being created we will post how they are being developed, from the initial melodic idea to the full studio recording. We want to make the process as interactive as possible so we very much welcome people’s feed back during this creative process. If you are a songwriter yourself and you would like to work with us in terms of putting the songs together please get in touch. We would benefit from both your insight into the particular road or street where you live and also your idea’s as to how the song should take shape.

By using the material you provide you will be deemed to be one of the song writers. We believe in giving “credit where credit is due”, so we will be sharing the songwriting music publishing credits between all the songwriters involved in the creation of the songs. All your song writing credits will be registered with The Performing Rights Society

So please do get in touch to make this exciting project come together.
